Appalachian Trail

Schedule

Monday, April 19: Arrive at Mountain Harbor Hostel on Monday afternoon (see link on page one for physical location). $30/bunk, $13.00 for buffet breakfast on Tuesday, April 20, $10.00 per person for shuttle service to Carvers Gap on Tuesday, April 20. If we have more people than bunks, we can tent for $10/tent.

Tuesday April 20: After eating a massive breakfast….the real fun begins as the group gets shuttled to Carvers Gap. Our goal is to hike 5.5 miles to the Overmountain Shelter. Here is a link that shows the Revolutionary War history of the Overmountain Shelter area https://www.battlefields.org/learn/articles/overmountain-men. As the shelter is unsafe at this time, we will camp out in the spacious grassy fields nearby. A water source exists here.

Wednesday, April 21: Fill up with water at Overmountain Shelter prior to beginning an epic walk with some strong climbs. Our goal is to climb and camp on top of Hump Mountain, which is a 4 mile hike from the Overmountain Shelter. There is a water source about a mile prior to the mountain summit. This will be a good spot to drink up and then pack water for the dry  summit. If you don’t have a backpacking water bottle such as a Nalgene container, 2 wide mouth plastic liter bottles from any gas station beverage would work. Try to have 2 quarts/liters of capacity minimum for the dry camp on top of Hump Mountain **If the weather is terrible, we can descend Hump Mountain to a large campsite known as Doll Flats, which would bring the day’s hiking mileage to 7 miles.

Thursday, April 22: If camping on Hump Mountain the night before, we have options here. We can spend the morning at Hump Mountain, and then camp at Doll Flats (only 3 miles from Hump Mountain). Or we can hike an additional 3 miles and head back to Mountain Harbor Hostel, for tent camping or bunks and a leisurely night. The hostel owner has told me that she has nice areas to photograph/train and was excited that Blood and Bones would be heading here.

Friday, April 23: Depending on where we ended up on Thursday (Doll Flats campsite or the Mountain Harbor Hostel), this is the day to pack up and travel back home. If we camped at Doll Flats, we would have about a three mile hike to US19, and could easily return to the Mountain Harbor Hostel to prepare for car travel.
